![]() The Grave Digger received its nom de guerre when it rose from the morass of broken truck parts in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Every time I’ve been to Monster Jam, the Grave Digger never finishes his run, the truck can’t handle the beating. #Monster truck jam qualcomm driver#The truck takes off and the crowd watches the skull and cross bone flag wave nearly 40 feet in the air over and over, before gravity cruelly punishes driver and machine. When the first notes of George Thorogood’s “Bad to the Bone” come on the sound system, the demonic red headlights flick on and the 1,700 horse power engine roars to life and the Grave Digger is about to leave everything on the table. I watched this truck get it in and unleash the carnage. I remember grabbing my brother, histronically pretending to fall over and screaming for so long I lost my voice until the next day. In his words, I want a “PPPHHHOOOOTTTOOOOOO FFFIINNNIISSHHHHH!!!!” Last year, during the run of by one of the Grave Digger’s progeny I got just that. The only I ask for my attendance at these events, and I think it is the same thing everyone in the stadium wants, is what the extremely drunk man that sat next to me wanted. The last time I went, the bonus judge was merciless, no matter how great their run was, he would low ball them hardcore giving 1s and 2s. #Monster truck jam qualcomm drivers#The drivers are intent on showing their deft driving skills, trying to get the biggest airs, best donuts, backflips and other tricks before they are given bonus time. ![]() ![]() What I came to see is the freestyle.ĭuring that portion, the trucks drive around the dirt course, scanning and imagining a pattern for their moves, before the 90 second timer starts and they attempt to lay waste to the obstacles, or kill their trucks trying, and the crowd absolutely goes bananas. We are guaranteed destruction and mayhem from all the trucks but one will never let us down, the immortal green and black wrecking machine, Grave Digger.īut Monster Jam is a competition after all, the trucks race each other two at a time around the course for the best times and in-between there are go-kart and motocross racing during the breaks, but I have less than no interest in that. What attracted me to monster trucks in my youth, is what draws me to them today, the deafening noises, the constant destruction of trucks and defunct cars, and watching these seven thousand pound machines launch themselves almost 40 feet in the air before gravity takes its toll on the machine.īefore a rally, there is an excitement in the air, the lights go out in the stadium, fireworks start going off, and you hear the roar of about a dozen 1,500 horsepower V-8s. The local monster truck shows have grown to a world wide phenomenon with rallies around the world, like the one I’m at now. The Archean era for monster trucks, the beginning of it all, happened in the mid 70s when Bob Chandler jacked up his Ford-250 and created the legendary Bigfoot, the vehicle from which all trucks would evolve from. I had one thing on my mind, “How can I get into that stadium as fast as possible?” ![]() While I mentally try to rationalize it, I hear the deafening roar of the monster truck engines emanate from the stadium, and my hesitation melts away. I am immediately feeling buyer’s remorse, thinking about how stupid I am for this purchase and what else I could have spent that money on. “Why did I spend almost 50 bucks to see this thing.” During the security check point, I have one thought running through my head. I told my brother the plan and after a short journey to San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium, I buy the second most expensive tickets and wait in line to get in. I got to thinking, I have to go to one of these things. It was an average day, I was watching television and saw an ad for a monster truck rally and it brought me back to being a kid, when I would constantly see jaw-dropping commercials of these monstrous vehicles fly through the air. ![]()
